Nivré – seminar “Het taxatierapport in de rechtspraktijk” - 19 January 2011
The Insurance & Liability practicioners of our firm co-hosted a seminar with Troostwijk Taxation, the leading firm of Valuators in The Netherlands for members of Nivré, the Dutch Institute of Registered Surveyors. The main topic on the agenda was the value to be attributed to different kind of valuation reports such as a walk-trough valuation in the process of the survey of damages.
VRT – workshop “Brand” (fire) – 21 November 2011
After co-hosting the seminar for the members of Nivré, the Insurance and liability practice of our firm was asked to co-host a workshop for the members of the VRT, the United Registered Appraisers. Again the value of different kind of valuation reports was discussed but this time seen through the eyes of the appraisers themselves.
International Law Seminar 2011-London
On 27th October 2011 we hosted together with 12 other lawfirms from different jurisdictions the International Law Seminar "Settlement of Shipping Claims in Foreign Jurisdictions". Some 200 participants attended in Merchant Taylors Hall and we believe the seminar was very well received. Arnold van Steenderen presented a paper especially focussing on universal psychological aspects of negotiation that play a dominant role in confict situations.
Pros and cons of mediation (4 November 2010)
The NVMV (Dutch Association of Mediators in the Insurance Industry) held a seminar for its members where Arnold van Steenderen made a presentation about the pros and cons of mediation in the insurance industry. Mediation is a structured settlement negotiation facilitated by a neutral third party, the mediator, who has no decision-making power. The focus of a mediation process is upon the interests of the parties, rather than on their legal rights alone. The process is conciliatory by its nature and the outcome consensual, in contrast to the contentious approach in court proceedings or arbitration.
Insurance & Liability Seminar - 26 November 2010
The insurance practice of our firm has hosted a seminar on board ss Rotterdam on Friday 26 November 2010 for insurance managers, brokers, surveyors and other interested parties to discuss damage assessment and damage regulation. There have been a number of speakers, both from the university and from the industry, and we believe the seminar was well received.
The London International Law Seminar - 20 October 2010
This year's topic "Dealing with Casualties in Foreign Jurisdictions" attracted 200 key people from the London Shipping & Insurance market. Our Merlijn Hijzen presented a paper dealing with the right of intervention by the Dutch government in respect of casualties inside and outside the Dutch territorial waters. It was the fifth anniversary of this successful seminar, which is hosted by fifteen foreign law firms.
IBA Madrid - 2009
At the 8 October 2009 joint meeting of the Maritime and Insurance law committees Arnold van Steenderen was one of the panelists dealing with the topic Coverage issues and Brokers' Liability.
The London International Law Seminar - October 2009
Together with 12 other foreign lawfirms Van Steenderen MainportLawyers has hosted the 4th international seminar in the City of London, covering issues of particular interest to the London market. This 2009 topic was: "Termination of Contracts and The Arrest of Assets". Jasper Groen gave a presentation highlighting the Dutch perspective. This years venue was the Trinity House.
The Netherlands Maritime University - Summercourse Korea 2008/2011
Our firm recognises the vlaue of legal education for the shipping and logistics professional and we are a dedicated partner of the Netherlands Maritime University, part of the Dutch 'Scheepvaart en Transport College'. In August 2008 Jasper Groen, and in July 2009 Merlijn Hijzen contributed to the Master Shipping & Transport programme, not only by developing the module on Shipping, Trade and Transportation Law, but also by taking an active role as a teacher in the Master programme in Gwangyang, Korea. This programme aims at preparing the participants from different perspectives and from the position of different supply chain players, to take management positions in the shipping industry. The curriculem provides for a legal and jurisdictional framework of logistics functions, linked to supply chains and international trade. For more information please visit www.stc-nmu.eu.
